Does anyone have a dehydrator? I was doing a lot of research and it seems like they're all pretty much trash. The most recommended ones are the Excalibur (overpriced and underperforming) and Nesco models.
The Nesco seems good on paper but I've read all kinds of problems from them just randomly dying one day to the fact that they expect you to stack the trays and run the dehydrator at 160F for a few hours so that they warp in order for them to fit (like what the actual F kind of nonsense is that?!) The trays tend to have a huge gap in the bottom that just lets the air out until this warping is done...
Wirecutter recommends Nesco Gardenmaster or Samson Silent because the Samson has a 5 year warranty. Samson Silent is loaded with complaints about the thing failing and the 5 year warranty might as well not exist because the shipping costs to return the thing are about half the cost of it (and it's already $115+ depending on the model).
I looked at a bunch of stainless steel models but there are reports of everything from the glass panels falling off to their electronics frying.
Considering that a dehydrator is just a heater, a fan, and in most modern models a digital controller, it's wild to think they're so poorly put together considering how much they cost. The Excalibur models are around $200 and if you want digital controls, they shoot past $300. The Nesco models range from $48 to over $200.
The roommates have been talking about wanting a dehydrator and I was thinking about buying one for the house because I wouldn't mind having access to dried fruit and like kale chips and stuff year round either. Beef jerky would be amazing too. I suppose I could get the Nesco Gardenmaster for $160 and just add a service plan to it in case something happens to it but something about warping plastic trays doesn't really scream healthy to me. My grandmother had an American Harvest which is who Nesco bought and their models are based on the American Harvest stuff but obviously with much lower quality because I don't remember the old one ever warping the trays and my grandmother had exactly zero issues with it ever. I know nothing warped because she used to make me fruit leather with applesauce and that requires flat trays so it doesn't spill inside of the unit.
I wish we could have high quality appliances again. *sigh*
