I suppose I applied too soon? I read I had good odds though with a year of credit history under my belt and only 1 card opened in the last 6 months. Here’s all my info if anyone would like to try and figure out why I was declined. Capital One Quicksilver opened 3/21 CL $2900 Discover It opened 4/21 CL $1500 Cred.ai opened 5/21 CL $1500 Apple Card opened 9/21 CL $11400 Affinity Pure Rewards opened 1/22 CL $2000 This is my second attempt for this card. I tried once before in 1/22. I was declined for not enough credit history. I had less than a year of building then, so that made sense. This decline makes less sense. I wonder if they’re counting their own inquiry as a new account along with the card from Affinity? FICO scores are 752 EX, 746 EQ and 742 TU. Oh well… Off to call Affinity now to product change that card I guess. Unless anyone here has any good dining cards in mind that I have a shot at first. Cardless perhaps? The Celtics card?

It's certainly less significant than an additional HP and far less significant than the addition of a new account. Those latter 2 events are Fico negative reason statement triggering, where a greater credit limit isn't despite you being provided a denial letter that did mention your aggregate revolving limits.
I went back and reread the decline letter. It said my combined credit was too LOW. I’ve only been building credit for 13 months though, so I wonder what they’re looking for? Of course it isn’t high. I have $19.3k in combined credit limits for my cards. Split between 5 of them. Averages out to $3860. Maybe they’re looking for a $5k average?

That sounds like a silly decline reason. I was approved of both the Custom Cash and Rewards+. Prior to that, I had only 2 revolvers: 1 with a credit limit of $1,200 and the other with a credit limit of $5,250. My oldest revolver was 3 years.

That’s what I thought. I hadn’t seen any data points for being declined for the Custom Cash for something like that before. Could be that I’m just one of the people Citi doesn’t like.

While I know you already know this and were just using a figure of speech, it's not you, but something about your profile that isn't working for Citi. This can be seen all the time when someone gets denied for something for whatever reason and that same reason didn't result in a denial for someone else. Above @Credible makes a good reference of this. All you can really do is look at your profile and see what can be improved / try to determine what isn't jiving well with them. Many times the answer is simply to allow more time to pass, which in this case seems like the best course of action. Playing the waiting game when you want something does suck of course, but unfortunately there isn't any way around that sometimes in the game of credit.

@Tinkegrrl It’s quite simple to me. In my humble opinion you had too many recent accounts. They are very picky with the custom, they want to see at least a minimum of one year history, but recent accounts and inquiries also lower your chances. I agree that if you just give yourself some time and don’t have many new accounts or inquiries before you try next time, you’ll be successful. You always have to be cognizant of accounts younger than a year of age and inquiries less than a year old, especially if applying to a picky lender or for a product they’re picky with. Yes you met the one year requirement but it’s hard not to have recent accounts with a file as Young as yours. Recent accounts and inquiries mean more on a young profile, imho. And they are required to give reasons, I wouldn’t necessarily count on the bottom reason meaning very much. Sorry I’m late to the party but I’m catching up chronologically.
