I have been thinking about simplifying a lot lately and I was just curious what 5 cards people absolutely couldn't live without. If I had to choose, I would keep my Affinity Cash Rewards, PenFed PCR, QuickSilver (oldest card), NFCU Platinum, and Citi Custom Cash. Amazon is still my highest spend outside of groceries which on the surface would make the Chase Amazon more valuable but the rotating categories on the Affinity card boost the value a lot plus it's an Amazon card too and I feel like Affinity would be more likely to grow over time than Chase, the PCR seems like a more reliable choice for a 2% card than the Active Cash because Wells Fargo plus that $25K limit means I won't ever have high utilization, the NFCU Platinum card also has a $25K limit with a low 6.24% (soon 6.74% and likely 9.24% before the year is out which is still a great APR) which makes it an excellent emergency card plus if my needs ever change it can easily be PC'd to a More Rewards/Flagship/cashRewards, the Custom Cash is the most flexible card I have with the automatic earning of 5% in my top category each month and is an amazing grocery card for me plus it has VCCs, and the QS is the reliable card that pretty much never declines that has VCCs as well.

That Kohl's card must be quite valuable!
Yea, it really is to my family. I buy the vast majority of my clothes there, I buy almost all of my daughter's clothes there, and my wife, who previously wasn't much of a fan, has even started to find things she likes there in addition to items we'll occasionally get there for our home, toys, etc. Just for instance, our last shopping trip there to buy Spring/Summer clothes for all of us added up to $300 before any discounts/promotions. By being a Kohls card holder, I had a coupon for 25% off the entire purchase on top of items already on sale, another cardholder offer for $20 off a $100 purchase that stacks with the 25% off, and "Kohls Cash" from previous card rewards totaling $40, and ended up paying about $180 for what would have been a $300 purchase. Now, on the $180 I actually spent, we received $30 additional Kohls Cash ($10 for every $50 spent) for our next trip plus 7.5% card rewards. So, I ordered my daughter a few items online that weren't available in store for a total of about $40, and after I used my Kohls Cash and card rewards, I spent less than $5. Just like I wrote in my post about that card, if you shop there fairly regularly and learn how to maximize their coupons/promotions/rewards systems to your benefit, it can really save you a lot of money.
How do they stay in business with sales like that? lol

Half the year it is. For the times it is 5% back on gas and groceries I use it for those categories. I don't have the CC so 5% on groceries works well for me on Discover when available. If Citi can ever resolve their reporting issues I still plan on converting my DC to a CC, so at that point the CC could become my grocery card and make Discover less valuable.

I totally agree. I value the Credit Unions no rewards, low APR, no fees, Platinum cards. It performs almost like a PLOC. In addition for the NFCU Platinum:
  • Targeted annual low or 0% APR, 0% BT fee for 12 months offer.
  • Cash Advance is +2% on current APR.
  • Cash Advance limit is 30% of your credt line.
  • Potential $50K max limit through SP. E.g. If 5.99% APR with $50K limit, available 7.99% APR with $15K cash advance.
Another keeper would be BECU Visa
  • Targeted annual 0% APR, 0% BT fee for 12 months offer.
  • Cash Advance APR same as purchase APR. (?)
  • Cash Advance limit is 100% of your credt line. (?)

Only five cards? That’s gonna be tough. Affinity, AOD, Navy platinum, Ducks, CC.

I’ll miss CF, Nusenda, MCP, cash plus, Discover
