I was bored and went for a SP CLI on my Custom Cash a couple weeks back just to see what they would say. I was given a 5.5k SL back in Dec and people state you can try at the 3 month mark, so I figured what the heck. I have put this CC through a lot - BTs and heavy use, but it shows high credit at just under $3.8k, so I havent driven it to the max in any given month....yet. I am running a 15 mo 0% offer, so I have not necessarily been PIF every month, since I have the BTs. I have paid the BTs down aggressively and always PIF my new purchases. I have recently been <30% util, but have had <50% and <70% report in the past. I figured why not? Let's see what they say. I had everything reporting <30%, so rolled the dice. I was denied. I am honestly not truly surprised as I still have a CA reporting and others have stated that while they had a derog reporting at initial approval, as in my case, they have had it held against them later when asking for a CLI. I will follow up with a pic of the denial letter, but while it mentioned specifically the major derog was part of the reason, they claimed the actual "reason for denial" was that my score was too low! My EX BC9 showed at 679, I will have to check if that was a fresh SP or an old one, but my approval was when I was >700. No sweat, it was a free shot at a CLI, and I will just circle back in Aug/Sept when the CA is removed and try again! I should have everything closer to AZEO then, so maybe that will help too.

That's a bummer. I wonder if they have a hard rule score wise when it comes to CLIs? I guess a good question to ask would be the lowest score anyone has had when getting a Citi CLI. BTW to clarify, you referenced your EX BC9 score. What about your EQ BC8 score that Citi uses on your account?

Clearly your usage on the account is sufficient to warrant a CLI, so I do think investigating the score angle could be beneficial. Is your profile optimized, or if you were to tweak some things (AZEO, balances, etc) would you be able to raise it some prior to attempting another request?

Citi can be stingy about CLIs. Sorry for the denial.

They gave me a PCLI for keeping it above 50%. Still under a year old I believe.

Sorry for the denial. Maybe keep the >50% balance on there for a little while and see if that stimulates one

@Saeren @Birdman @BrutalBodyShots Thanks for all the feedback! I quoted my EX BCE8 because that is the score they gave me in my denial letter. On my profile, my EQ BCE8 is 682, from 4/26, which is higher than the 679 they quoted on my denial letter (which was EX BCE8, anyway). Do they supposedly use EQ BCE8 exclusively for CLIs? My approval was when I was in the 700s and they also used EX. They used EQ for my Citi Best Buy Visa, but as I shared in another post, it was different addresses, in different regions. I curently have an unreported balance of $4.75k of $5.5k....I am not sure if I am brave enough to allow a maxxed out balance to report, but perhaps, I will allow it to post >50% this month? Maybe if I am lucky, and I otherwise optimize my profile, in addition to >50% balance, but my CA still reporting, we can dicipher it was actually a score issue. I am going to guess they want to see it back above 700 or 720. If it is denied, but then approved after the CA is removed, it will be truly hard to tell if it was score or the CA because the score increase will be large once it is gone... Also, do I need to wait 90d before requesting a CLI again? Or can I try monthly?

Ok, so after review my BCE8 scores in MF, it does look like I was mistaken and they did use my EQ and *not* EX BCE8 scores.

My EX BCE8 scores have been in the 700s.

My EQ BCE8 score was 679, which was a very old score that they used. On 4/26 it updated for Citi to 682. Whereas my EX BCE8 scores have been 708/706/700 over the past 3 months.

My EQ BCE8 score was in the 720s in Nov/Dec.

I will work on making my profile a bit prettier before my next request for a CLI.

This really deflated any excitement because while my CA is removed via EE off EX in Sept, my CA on EQ will not be off until 2024 sometime.

Well, that will be better for testing, I guess! If score can overcome a CA for a CLI with Citi. I am not holding my breath....

My best guess will be no CLI until that CA is gone in March/April 2024... whats another 9-10 months lol Actually, probably even longer since they were using really old reports/score...maybe a year, then?

I’m not sure how often I think at least every 30 days maybe even sooner. I’m not sure their policy someone knows. I think I usually try every six months, I don’t know if that’s because it was the rule or just what I did.

Either way I would let over 50% report maybe even 70% because that can definitely stimulate a PCLI it did for me, but of course I’m clean. I’ll let it ride over 50% for a few months, bim. I’m trying again. 0% promo period is nice why not?

Glad you cleared up the EQ vs EX thing.

I think you can request essentially as often as you like, so monthly or whatever would be fine.

As for what to report, my take on it is the higher the better so long as you're going to pay it off. Even if that higher reported balance knocks down your score some in the meantime, you'll likely land a new "high balance" on the account which IMO will help future CLI chances. But, if you time things right, you'll probably be able to make a request between when the account reports that high utilization and when Citi does another pull to update your score for account maintenance. I'd probably shoot for that, but if you come up short on the CLI request I believe you'll be in a better place to make it next time after reporting that high utilization and paying it down.
