Cabela's Capital One

My oldest card finally got a decent bump. $2500 CLI from Cap 1 is . . . unexpected. Makes it $3900. Most of you are on the other forum and probably saw my post there a few days ago. I'm just exploring this place, lol. October 2015 SL $500 August 2020 $600 Jan 20, 2021 $700 Jul 18, 2021 $800 Jan 16, 2022 $950 Jul 13, 2022 $1200 Jan 10, 2023 $1400 When I got no soup in July, I thought I'd been passed over this time, but Aug 9, 2023 $3900

That's a really large bump for them for sure. What was your spending like?

I spent $326 back in May and took a couple months to pay it off only because it's 9.99% interest for Cabela's purchases and I had a couple of higher interest cards that needed to be paid off first. My July statement balance was $152. And people have theorized now and then that showing a statement balance may sometimes help getting a CLI from Cap1. I tried shortly after that statement, like I usually do at the 6-month mark but got nothing. Kept trying every week or so and finally got the bump in August, before the statement, but after I paid off the balance, if that means anything. I haven't put big spend on this card in ages. There was a time when it was my only rewards card and I put everything I could on it. $10k plus per year on a $500 card by paying it off every two weeks when I got paid.

Congratulations! It's an interesting data point, considering recent news about several companies that seem to be preparing for a recession.

That's definitely a huge bump for that spend. Meanwhile I'm waiting to see what they slash my $10K SavorOne to because I got the "we're gonna slash your card for low usage" message of doom and the review is this month. It's my Uber card so I don't really care but it does irk me that they're the only creditor I have who has ever slashed me (they slashed my QS from $8250 to $2K during the pandemic) and they're getting ready to do it again. Maybe I should just call and opt out like they gave me the option to do. Anyway, very nice for Cap. EDIT: Last day to opt out was the 11th. I guess I can look forward to two $2K cards with Cap lol.

It's a card that doesn't usually get a lot of spend month-to-month, maybe $40-$80 every other month, but occasionally there's a single large purchase. I wanted to buy a $2000 rifle scope and get my Cabela's points for the purchase, but my card wasn't anywhere near large enough. I used my Cabela's credit card to buy Cabela's gift cards until I had enough. I had to do the same thing when I bought a $900 pistol with this card that had a $700 CL at that time. I'm thinking there may be another $2k+ purchase on the horizon and I was really hoping for a limit that would cover it. Finally got it. There's a theory that you need to spend 30%-40% of the limit for several months in a row to get a CLI from them. I very rarely do that and have gotten CLIs every six months for the past several years. Those CLIs have been insultingly small until now. This is one I needed, not just for padding, but to make the card usable for purchases at this store.

Can you not just put a burger on it? Or does it need more significant spend to save it? Or do you know?

Maybe Capital One's algorithms noticed all those purchases and decided that you needed more money to effectively use the card. They are a largely algorithm-operated company so this wouldn't be even remotely surprising.

I've been using it for Uber but in Denver we have this program for disabled people that instead of having to take the disabled buses they let us use Uber and cover the first $25 of the charge so basically all that's going on there is the tips one or two times a week. I understand that my credit limit is totally out of whack for my usage... It just sucks because this was my first $10K outright approval way back in 2019 and it was such an outlier approval being that I was 9/24 and even had just added two cards before that approval when Capital One was known to have an unofficial 4/24 at that point. I get it though. It's just business. I would appreciate if they leave it at $5K but I'm bracing for the worst. I had two months or so of notice that it was coming and just didn't want to get on the phone with the automated system and lie that I was going to use it more so it is what it is.
