On a Reddit post just now, someone mentioned they applied for a Cap One SavorOne, and that the score shown on their denial letter was pulled from Experian, but it did not match the FICO 8 shown on a fresh pull on the Experian app. For funsies, I went to the Cap One pre-approval tool and entered my info, and the score they show me in the pre-approval letter matches my EX FICO 3. We all know Cap One is famous for the 3 CRA hard pull once you actually apply, but are they using EX FICO 3 for lending decisions? That would be pretty strange! Anyone have DPs on this?

Hey @SoonerSoldier33 ! The oldest data point I can find is from 2016 where it's referenced that Capital One uses Fico 3, EQ Fico 5 and also Fico 4. All older models, clearly. https://ficoforums.myfico.com/t5/Credit ... -p/4541566

Not sure what's worse. That Cap One has been using the ancient models seemingly forever, or that I didn't know about it. Lol. In my defense, I haven't applied for a Cap One card in years, as I already have the 2 I want, but yea...I had no clue. Thanks!

I knew they used FICO 3. I suspect that's the reason it gets grouped with the credit card scores in MF, even though I think it was originally intended to be a mortgage score. I keep thinking that I read somewhere that Cap1 uses one of the more modern scores mixed in there, like 8, 4, and 3, or maybe 5, 8, and 3 or something like that. I don't know where I read it or if I'm misremembering it. Even if that is what I read, it doesn't necessarily mean that the person who wrote that knew what he was talking about. EDIT: Now looking at the "Which Report Will They Pull, Part 2" thread, it says "EX 3 + EQ 5 + TU 4 (triple pull)"

I can't confirm the EX3 from personal experience, but on my Savor approval a couple days ago the letter references an Equifax score that is my EQ5. The odd thing with the EX3 being used is that a roommate of mine that moved out not quite a year ago got his student quicksilver and letter referenced an EX scoore that matched his EX8 (maybe his EX3 and 8 were the same?)

Wonderer? Does using a Mortgage Score yield a harder lower score outcome? Is it more predicative of the actual customer credit and payment cycle? Inquiring minds want to know! On top of it, pulling hard inquiries from all three credit bureaus? Sure wonder. Back in the day Capital One only inquired of one bureau. As a purveyor of credit, I surely see the advantage of a three bureau pull but is Capital One and their products worth it. Chase usually only does one and we know they are offering good products.

This reference is from 2016 (eight years ago) so it is really germane today?

My 5/4/3 have always been lower than my 8.

Who knows? But with nothing more current to go by, I consider that to still be the best information we have.

You missed my point. It was already established that Capital One uses Fico 3 today. I wrote in my post above that the 8 year old quote was the oldest reference I could find of them using it; my intent was to provide an old data point to show that Capital One has had a history of using Fico 3 in lending decisions... at least 8 years of it.
