I am obviously thrilled about this, but quite frankly - I am terrified it will be clawed back! This is well over a 2 year (probably closer to 3 or 4 years due to accruing interest) leap in repayment just paying the minimum monthly payment of $502! This brings me ever closer to 100% util instead of the original 150-250%+ util which was simply crushing. Allnpayments went to interest and never touched principal and now it shows both principal and interest has had a significant reduction! This will hopefully help towards the dream of one day buying a home because I knew SL balances would always be a hurdle I would have to overcome in UW. I have heard of some people saying their loans were forgiven (not partially) recently out of the blue, but they were either disabled or something else restrictive, like the bad schools that weren't accredited or gave false info. Also, SO has SLs through the same servicer from around the same time and has had no such changes. He owes significantly less, just under 9k, if that matters. Thoughts!?

Maybe you got included accidentally in one of the already ongoing forgiveness rounds? A few days ago I heard something on CNN about 'tens of thousands' already receiving complete loan forgiveness, but that had something to do with public service. I Googled and found a few more ways that could happen (article from last month too): https://www.forbes.com/sites/zackfriedm ... 0586aa108b

I did work in public service for 15 years, but never signed up for the program. They knew my employer, so maybe I got partial forgiveness for the years I worked in the public sector? Obviously not all 15 years counted because the program did not start that long ago. I guess maybe I should look further into that? Or just leave it be? I am so scared if I bring attention to it that it will be clawed back!

I would think you'd get a letter at some point, like the people interviewed on CNN mentioned receiving. I'd just wait a few weeks and see if anything turns up in the mail. All this stuff is happening really quickly with this administration - there's bound to be some programming errors here and there that might have caused this. Like maybe the code flagged your public service as something more current....or maybe you really do qualify for something that hasn't even been announced yet.

I wouldn't really worry about tipping them off to the mistake. They would discover it anyway and come after you for the difference even years down the line after an audit. If it's a mistake, better to find out now than later.

Well I do know they said they were going to count years of public servuce that was previously undocumented, even if you had not applied for the program, and would be retroactive. Perhaps it is something like that is what happened. Several of my years do count, just not all of them since I worked in the public sector for longer than the program has been in existence. I would think maybe 5 or 6 years have been worked during the program. Edit: it looks like the prgram started in 2007 l, so that would be 9 years of public service haha damn, 1 year short.

So I got to thinking - and this is probably 100% wrong, but these loans show no principal has ever been paid. Now, not to say the loans don't start over once rehabbed, but maybe they are taking off what I originally paid towards them? That would seem to make some sort of sense. But it would make on think there should have been some sort of bookkeeping done along the way and they shouldnt have just conveniently "forgot" I had already paid on them for several years? Not to mention, they had me in collections and were trying to get, what...the full original amount plus what I had already paid? The % paid towards principal and interest makes some sense, especially since the loans were taken at different times? It ranges from 5% (on the big consolidated loan) to 33.6% on the original loans that were not consolidated. It may mean nothing, but it sure is odd. I have no idea. I am still at a loss.

SO had the same thing happen on his SLs through the same servicer. He is finally under 100% original loan balance! Even including outstanding interest!

This is very exciting news! We need to bring each loan down $885 bucks to get under the 60% threshold, as they are at 93% right now, but it seems so much more within reach!

I am not sure why, again. The other loans never had the balances reversed, nor did SO's. They have seemed to "stick" so far. I am so confused at these reductions in our balances. They are not noted anywhere in any statements and I have never received any notices online or via email/mail, the balances have just dropped! Maybe my 3rd set of SLs will get a similar reduction, as well as SO's second set of SLs.... Nobody else has had this happen?

Are you saying the balances get reduced on the credit report but not on the account statements from Navient? I wonder if it has something to do with this: Navient is forgiving the student debt of 66,000 borrowers. How to know if you’re one of them I mean, even if none of that applies to you specifically, maybe there's an error somewhere in their update code. [EDIT: I noticed that Navient reached a settlement recently with around 39 states. "Navient denies...." = SKETCHY. lol ]
