Credit based insurance scores (CBIS) Credit-based insurance scores were introduced by the FICO in the early 1990s. ‘FICO estimates approximately 95% of auto insurers and 85% of homeowners' insurers use credit-based insurance scores in states where it is a legally allowed underwriting or risk classification factor.’ [NAIC](https://content.naic.org/cipr_topics/topic_creditbased_insurance_scores.htm) Five states limit the use of CBIS: : [Experian article](https://www.experian.com/blogs/ask-experian/which-states-prohibit-or-restrict-the-use-of-credit-based-insurance-scores/) One company that provides the service is LEXIS-NEXIS, another is Verisk. If I recall correctly, Lexus uses Equifax and Verisk uses TransUnion. If your rates have been high and you have improved your credit, you can have your insurer pull a new score and maybe get a lower premium at renewal time. The algorithms that are used are totally different from credit algorithms. For instance at Lexis, store cards penalize you, especially if they are your oldest card and even more so if it is your oldest card by far. Gas cards hurt you, all retail cards. Credit union accounts improve your score up to 33% of accounts. You would not believe all the different factors they use. Insurance companies can make exceptions based on life events; however there’s no standards I am aware of to explain that. But it’s worth asking, if you’re being highly penalized. Missing information can harm you, as can inaccurate information. Hope this is helpful. u/IrritatedAvians [Lexis](https://risk.lexisnexis.com/insurance/datause) [Commercial Attract reason codes](https://risk.lexisnexis.com/-/media/files/insurance/commercial-attract-reason-codes%20pdf.pdf) [correlation between credit history and accident claim](https://risk.lexisnexis.com/-/media/files/insurance/brochure/national_credit_file%20pdf.pdf) [FAQs](https://vermontmutual.com/images/pdf/insurance_score_FAQ.pdf) © 2022, MFBirdman7. @Cassie this is the second thread where I have posted a PDF and it has doubled the name. I had one person report to me on Reddit that the other one I did they could not click and open it, they had to take the link and put it in their browser. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong but I’m treating it as a picture to upload it because I don’t see a document upload button. Please advise. And I don’t recall where the other one was I think it was a PDF from the CFPB. Also I have space after the attachment before your name but yet it’s not putting it there

It took way more hand work than it should have, but I have just finished the CSV file of the LexisNexis Attract Reason Codes. AKA: the Insurance Industry Reason Codes. The PDF to text process scrambled some letters, lost a few more and jumbled code numbers. I have tried to catch all the errors, but call any out that you see. I have also put it in spreadsheet form using LibreOffice Calc. You should be able to open and manipulate either the .csv or .ods with any spreadsheet program. The ODS will give you the more polished experience since it keeps all the formatting and presentation settings whereas CSV is just the data and a minimum of format. I intend to apply keywords to the spreadsheet to help make it sortable for codes having to do with different things. It would be better as a database but I know spreadsheet so that's how I'm going to roll. Anyone wanting to database it is more than welcome.

Thanks a lot, @Have1 ! That's going to have its own page here: insurance-industry-reason-codes.php That's just a rough draft for now, using the default CSV-to-HTML conversion in Excel.

Thank you @Cassie. I got an itch after I posted and started playing with LibreOffice Base. I ended up making another version of the csv using tabs to separate the values in hopes of being able to import it into a database that I can use. I didn't get to the point of actually getting it working yet. I had reached my limit for data manipulation for the day. I should have some time this weekend to "play" some more with it.

We might need to tie the words Lexus Nexus & attract onto the thread for searches from google etc.? @Have1 this is gonna be great!

When I downloaded, it converts to HTML & screws up the formatting.

Looks good on its own thread though.

I'm still working on the data side of it trying to get a format I can feed into a database. I want to be able to sort by keyword to group reasons by what they affect or refer to. Part of that will be a spreadsheet with columns for keywords that can be sorted by. I figure that will be more accessible to most people than a database file. Of course, I still need to add keywords to each reason codes one by one....

I'll wait to update that special page unti @Have1 is satisfied with the final version. The page I made needs to have better table formatting and an in-page search option. (Alternating row colors, sticky header, mobile format, etc.)

@Cassie @Birdman Here is the V2 of the LexisNexis ATTRACT Reason Codes. I think it's ready to be released to the masses. It has been scrubbed for weird characters and missing letters from the conversion from PDF. I pulled the page numbers from the output. While they may have been useful for crosschecking they are redundant since the codes are numbered anyway. I did a spell check on the document but left the inconsistencies in presenting trade names and abbreviations and in place. I output ODS, XLSX and HTML files. Hopefully it will make them easier to work with for different uses.

You will have to rename "V2-Insurance-Industry-reason-codeshtml.txt" to V2-Insurance-Industry-reason-codes.html to open it in a browser. The uploader doesn't approve of attaching html files to posts. Probably the smart choice. I am going to keep plugging away at LibreOffice Base to see if I can get it to show just the codes that have certain keywords which I think will help with narrowing down how different things are being measured. Learning curve and all that. I want to parse it and see if I can come up with a short list of things to be aware of re: ATTRACT Codes and how seemingly innocuous activities can hurt your insurance scores. Edit: Formatting

Sounds great and I’m so glad that you are taking on this project. It’s something I wanted to do but I had some medical issues and it slowed me down , so I’ve never been able to get to it, so it’s a blessing to have you doing it. And it sounds like you’re doing a fantastic job! Thank you and all the people that come behind will be grateful as well I’m sure!

Also there is a home score and then an auto score. Did you notice if those codes were for specifically one or the other? I think there’s one set for both but I’m not sure so just asking.

I'm just trying to make some kind of contribution. And the subject interests me. I haven't done much yet except try to get the data pulled out of the one PDF. Now I have to start digging in and figuring it out. I still need to learn quite a bit. And dig into the other versions to see what is different and what is the same.

They may have the same codes but I don’t think so that’s what makes them different I believe but they could just use different weighting, I don’t recall. Let us know when you figure it out. And again thank you!

@Birdman , I have made the thing. It is more a research tool than an explanation of what it means. It's rather massive. I'm afraid that if I just post it in one huge post it will be a wall of words which kind of defeats the purpose. I could post each section as a post in a thread which would enable me to put an index to the sections in the first post, but how do I avoid someone jumping in with replies before I get it all posted? And, do you want to see it before I unleash it upon the world? Edit for clarification.
